CHOICE Humanitarian ignites lasting change in rural, impoverished communities that lack simple human necessities such as clean water, education, health care and opportunities to earn an income. We work in hundreds of rural villages across Kenya, Nepal, Guatemala, Bolivia and Mexico to provide opportunity to create a better life. We teach the skills and principles of development by guiding the villages through a 3-5 year learn-by-doing process. Eventually these villages become self-developing, solving their own poverty issues independently.

One of the crowning events of our lives.

Choice Expedition, Guatemala, Dec. 2010
The expedition to Guatemala with CHOICE Humanitarian was one of the crowning events of our lives. We had always wanted to participate as a family in an international humanitarian project , and CHOICE had the perfect program for us. We left Ohio at 5pm on Christmas Day, 2010, and arrived in Guatemala City at midnight. The fun began when we met with our expedition leaders and the other 29 dedicated volunteers the following morning. Immediately, we developed friendships with the other families. We were very excited to finally arrive at the village of La Laguna, in the lush jungle mountains of Guatemala. As we exited the buses, the village children came from all directions to welcome us; and in a matter of minutes, everyone was greeting each other, playing tag, or kicking a soccer ball. I was amazed at how fast my children were beginning to immerse themselves in this new culture.

Our goal was to build two additional classrooms for the school, and to dig trenches for running water to the villagers' homes. The work was very well organized with the help of our in-country directors and expedition leaders. It was amazing to see how quickly we began to work together unloading trucks, staking cement blocks, and digging the foundation with picks and shovels. We worked diligently shoulder to shoulder with the men of the village; and although we could not speak their language, we were unified in our desire to build a better future for their children.

During the busy work days there was plenty of fresh water to drink and excellent food to eat. By the second day in La Laguna, we were very comfortable in our new surroundings. As the work continued, I recalled something our expedition leaders had said during our orientation. They said that the expedition was more about the people than about the work projects. With this in mind, I began to focus on the people of the village. I noticed how happy the children were. The boys loved to play soccer, and the girls loved to have their nails painted. The parents were also happy that we were expanding the school so that more children could be educated. They were also very proud of their community and wanted to share it with us. We came to serve them, but they also wanted to serve us. One of the village men, Pedro, invited my family to his home to meet his wife and children. They offered us bananas and oranges right off the trees. We met his son who was attending school in El Estor for advanced training to become a teacher. I could see in Pedro's eye how proud he was of his son. Family love is strong in La Laguna.

Our week came and went too soon. The spectacular New Year's Eve celebration on our last evening was complete with delicious tamales, a colorful piƱata, fireworks, and dancing. My family and I will always remember this special Christmas vacation we spent together in Guatemala. We will remember the friendships we made with the other CHOICE volunteers and people of La Laguna. In fact, we left a piece of our hearts there.

2011 Resolution: Join a CHOICE Expedition!

I've never been to a village like this. I love playing with the kids. Something about here has changed me. The service we do for these people is a step we can take to a happier life.

Expedition Team, Guatemala, December 2011.
We are excited to begin 2011 with new expeditions and new volunteers! 2010 was such a success as we sent groups of all sizes across the globe to serve developing villages in need.

Now that 2011 is here, where will you be traveling? What resolutions have you made? Will you travel the globe and construct a health clinic in Nepal? Or build school desks in Kenya? Will you leave the comforts of home to install a water system in Bolivia? Or pour the foundation of a schoolhouse in Mexico?

Just this month, a group of 35 dedicated volunteers returned from Guatemala after spending the winter break in the jungles of the Polochic! All the participants - adults and children alike - worked hard to build a local schoolhouse before celebrating New Year's Eve with the villagers.

Please take a moment to read some of their personal comments below.

Watch and learn. You will see amused, but kind, expressions on their faces as they watch you struggle with a task that is so simple for them.

We are having a wonderful time on our expedition with CHOICE...Eric and Andrew have enjoyed working hard on the water project...Alexa has enjoyed working on the stairs to the schoolyard, painting the children's fingernails, and making clay pots...This has been a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime experience for our family. Thank you CHOICE.

Awakened by the roosters...again! Dylan woke up this morning with a spider in his pants.
-C.L. (Age 9 - Washington)

I feel like I could stay and live here forever. These people are incredible and have a big place in my heart. I can't explain the immense joy and peace I feel here.

The New Year's Eve party is happening right now. If there is a paradise on earth, this has to be it.
-S.C. (Age 23 - Utah)

I gotta say, I am lovin' this country! 2-year olds are shooting off fireworks that 16-year olds would be fined for in Utah! The food is great too.

Having been on expeditions with other groups and organizations, I thought I knew what to expect in La Laguna. However, this was a completely different experience for me. I had the chance to talk to the father of several students who told me how much this means to them...I saw tears in his eyes when he explained to me how we were giving his children a future. It finally hit me how important this is. This has been one of the best experiences I've had.

We have loved the simplicity, the stars, the disconnectedness from our hectic world...THANK YOU CHOICE for the best Christmas ever!

Next departure: MARCH 5th - MARCH 12th to GUATEMALA!!!
I recently returned from an expedition to Mexico and wanted to share with you what I saw and the work you are supporting.

The women of Tamaula, Mexico are making history...and cheese! With the help of CHOICE Humanitarian, they have created their own all women business making gourmet goat cheese and selling it to the surrounding areas. The process starts around six in the morning and the most basic cheese (queso ranchero) can be done by lunch! Other types include decadent berry marmalade mixtures or seasoned herb and spice varieties. These flavored cheeses take up to three days to rest before they are ready to eat.

Our recent expedition to this village was, as most expeditions are, amazing! We traveled with a group of college students from an organization called FeelGood World who has recently partnered with CHOICE and our cause! FeelGood students run gourmet grilled cheese delis on college campuses raising money to end world hunger.

We stayed right in the village of Tamaual which has been working with CHOICE for a number of years and have completed many successful projects. Up until now these women have each worked within their own tiny homes making cheese every day and have been working towards expanding their business by building a cheese production factory.

The cheese factory was just about completed as we arrived and we were privileged to help with some of the finishing touches such as plastering and painting the outside a beautiful aqua blue. We also got to help build cement cistern to capture water from the upcoming rainy season.

This cheese factory will allow the women of Tamaula to work together and increase production of their delicious cheese. They already have their own logo, beautiful packaging and a high demand for their product!

My favorite thing about the women of Tamaula was their sense of humor and patience for one another. There was a lot of teasing and laughing despite the hard work. When you remember to laugh, life is a whole lot more enjoyable.

Our time in Tamaula was very rewarding. It was amazing to see an empowered, thriving village as a result of the partnership with CHOICE Humanitarian. Thank youeveryone and especially Deseret Health for supporting Mexico and these beautiful women!
